Senior Database Engineer / Database Architect (PostgreSQL Migration) (Ref. #26149)
For our client in the telecommunications sector, we are looking for an experienced Senior Database Engineer / Database Architect to support a strategic database migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL.
The role focuses on database architecture, migration planning, performance optimisation and technical consulting within a complex enterprise environment. The consultant will work closely with architecture, development and operations teams and support the full migration lifecycle from assessment to implementation and knowledge transfer.
- Advise and support the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
- Define and review target architectures for PostgreSQL-based environments
- Analyse existing database landscapes, data models and workloads
- Plan and execute database migrations, including migration strategy and cutover concepts
- Assess and optimise database performance, query tuning and resource consumption
- Conduct sizing, capacity and scalability analyses
- Advise on high availability, disaster recovery, backup and restore strategies
- Support the migration of database objects such as stored procedures, views, functions and triggers
- Identify SQL Server-specific dependencies and define suitable PostgreSQL target implementations
- Support test concepts, migration testing and performance testing
- Create technical documentation, guidelines and best practices
- Transfer knowledge to internal teams and operational units
- Based in Switzerland, with work performed exclusively in Switzerland
- At least 8–10 years of experience as a Database Engineer, Database Architect or DBA
- Several years of hands-on experience with PostgreSQL in enterprise environments
- Proven project experience in migrations from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture and internals
- Strong experience in query optimisation and performance tuning
- Good knowledge of indexing strategies and partitioning
- Experience with high availability and replication concepts
- Strong understanding of backup and recovery concepts
- Experience with capacity planning, sizing and scalability assessments
- Very good SQL skills
- Experience with migration tools and database assessment methods
- Ability to identify technical risks early and propose suitable mitigation measures
- Very good communication and consulting skills
